Do you have any idea which station would be best for the K17? |
Just in case you've never been there and have heard about how great it is: I know, everybody wants to go there, because 5 floors of goth music sound rather impressive. But K17's goth days seem to slowly fade away. These days they usually have one floor for goth music, one for Metal, one for Metalcore etc., one for Electro/Techno and one for Funpunk/Rock/Pop/Partyclassics.
So for a really nice night in Berlin you might want to check out www.etoile.de (under "PLZ-Bereich 1") for alternatives. On weekends there usually is plenty to choose from and those tend to be quite large parties as well. Dates for an upcoming month tend to be complete by the beginning of the month.
Just to save you from an unpleasant surprise. |
Hiya and thanks, its good to know which places to go to, though I'll be meeting a few people I know at K17 theres no reason I/we can't check out other places |
K17 is not what it used to be, however I still love to go there whenever I'm in Berlin. Still beats much of the UK goth clubs! Incidently, if you're also going to be in Berlin before WGT, a group of us plan to go to the Last Cathedral on the Wednesday night. A couple of years ago a few people turned up from the Yahoo WGT forums and it was a fun evening, so I'll be posting info about this again closer to the date.

Hi Aly, Thanks for that I also know several people from London who are going to the Last Cathedral before K17 on the Wednesday haha! even possibly the same suspects! |

But again: don't expect too much regarding goth/black scene in Berlin. It's a great city though and you'll get a lot of it in Leipzig so I'd suggest to pay attention to other things than that when you're over here. |
Thanks, yeah I hear ya. It's going to be my birthday on the Wednesday though so I have a good excuse (like I need one)
I'm going to be back in Berlin for a few days in the Autumn anyway, so I'll do all the cultural/other stuff then |

You wont get lost over here. There's always a U-Bahnstation (Subway Station) or a bus or streetcar (Tram) stop next to you. _________________ Mit leerem Kopf nickt es sich leichter. |

If you think K17 is great compared to UK goth clubs try out one of the other Berlin goth parties and you'll be blown away. By the way, dunno what Last Cathedral was like a couple of years ago, but these days it's rather sleazy with an oversexed teeny-mallgoth crowd. Again, nothing wrong with that, it's just that you need to be into that sort of thing. And to be fair, the music is rather fine there on wednesdays.
As for wednesdays, there's a great party at Amnesie called "Knochengerümpel" (just don't know if it will last until may. In Berlin, one never knows). Amnesie is actually a punk bar, but at wednesdays they play a great party selection of trashy pop mostly from the 80s with a little wave, goth, metal thrown in the mix and the occasional odd surprises. Hard to describe but definitely worth checking out. Plus free admission and cheap drinks. Located not far from K17 near Frankfurter Allee.
By the way, K17 is recently closed on weekdays except for the occasional live show (mostly Metalcore and the likes). |
I know what you mean about Last Cathedral at the weekends, I felt very old there! However, its a pretty cool place to go on a weeknight, being that its usually very quiet but still with cool music and its fab (but cheesy) horror decor. Last time I arranged a pre-WGT meet we pretty much took over the place! (incidently, yes I have been there since the last meet up as I go to Berlin quite often!)
I keep hearing about there being better clubs than K17, however they never seem to be on the weekends I'm there - bad timing!

I also have a question. I plan on getting the ICE since it only takes something like 1 hr 15 mins from Berlin to Leipzig. The problem is whether to reserve train tickets or not. If I do, it'll be much cheaper and we're guaranteed a seat. If I don't, then we can take any train we like without worrying about the flight (Ryanair) being delayed or the bags taking forever.
What would you recommend? I also don't want to spend ages hanging around the train station waiting for my train because I was too over-cautious with the time I booked.
Nor do I want to pay extortionate amounts of money! Help! |

Seat reservation and discount prices for booking a specific train are two different things.
If you book one of the various "Sparpreis" (discount) tickets (for which you need to be quick enough as there is only a limited number of them for each train and they tend to sell out) they are only valid for the specific train that you booked. This does, however, not include seat reservation, which is 2,50€ extra per seat and direction.
If you decide to go for regular fare, you are free to take any train to Leipzig on the day the ticket is valid. Seat reservation for this option is still possible for said 2,50€. When buying the tickets in advance you would then choose a train for which the seat reservation will be made. If you happen to miss that train you'll only lose the seat reservation, the ticket will still be valid for any other train. Or you can buy the train ticket upon arrival in Berlin. Up to 10 minutes before departure you can still book seat reservations with your ticket if still availible. This way you can be sure not to reserve a seat in advance that you might not need. Of course it might be that seat reservations are sold out by then. You'll still get the ticket, however. They never sell out.
As for advice: I'd try to book some discount fare without taking any precautions for delays. If you won't make it to the train you booked you can go to the "Reisezentrum" (ticket office) and let them rebook your ticket. You'll pay the upcharge from discount to regular fare plus 15€ "service fee". I think the 15€ you might lose compared to booking regular fare right away are very well worth the gamble for a significantly lower price.
And I'd skip the seat reservations. They're not too expensive, but you don't really need them. It's not a long trip and the trains are rather spacious, so you won't be too uncomfortable without a seat. |

| I've taken the ICE 2 times from Berlin to Leipzig for WGT. I would agree about skipping the seat reservation. Lots of open seats. There was First class , regular class and a smoking car if that's your thing. |

Ok, just booked my tickets. Unfortunately there were no 2nd class Sparpreis tickets left so I ended up getting the Normalpreis tickets. Cost €86 per person just to go from Berlin to Leipzig. Scheisse
Have booked them with plenty of time for delays and if everything's running on time then we can go and sit in a café in Berlin for a couple of hours. My other half has never been so that could be nice.
I should've booked the train earlier; I thought that 2 months in advance would be sufficient. Oh well. |

86 euros per person, just one way ticket? That's a rip-off!
For 86 euros, I have found return AIR tickets from Greece to Berlin!!!!!!! |
